Why Self Care Matters (and How We Can Help)
August 11, 2025Booking your first massage appointment can seem intimidating and stressful. With so many modalities, styles, and therapists to choose from, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. But once you understand the basics, the process becomes a breeze. We want to guide you through every step of the way so you can begin to experience relaxation and relief as soon as you walk through our door.
What Happens During a Massage?
If you’ve never had a massage or been in a spa setting, here’s some insight on what you can expect:
-
Greeting and Intake Session:
After you’ve been greeted by your massage professional, a small intake session will be given. If it is your first massage at that location, you will be given a health intake and consent form to fill out. -
Health Check-In:
With the nature of massage, it is important for your Touch practitioner to know any contraindications that you may have in your health history so that we may safely take care of you. Full knowledge and consent of what will happen during your appointment is also necessary for everyone’s safety. If it is not your first massage, your practitioner will do a small verbal check in about any changes to your health and what goals you have in mind for your session. - Getting on the Table:
Afterwards, your therapist will step out of the room to give you time to disrobe and get onto the table. Disrobing is completely up to the clients comfort and their needs during the session. Once you are on the table and covered by the sheet and blanket, your massage therapist will return and begin your session.
The Right Massage for You
There are several massage modalities to choose from, including Swedish, Deep Tissue, Energetic, and Clinical. To select the best option, consider your goals:
- Do you want to feel deeply relaxed?
- Are you looking to relieve muscle tension or work out knots?
- Do you have specific areas, like your shoulders or hips, that need attention?
Once you’ve identified your goals, your massage therapist can tailor the session to meet your needs.
But What Do I Wear?
This can feel like the scariest part of the session. The best part is – It is up to you! Many individuals who are comfortable with being massaged opt to fully undress, while those who are newer will keep their bottom undergarments on. Both options are optimal for massaging as much of the body as is practical. If these options sound uncomfortable to you, you are always allowed to keep whatever layers on that make you feel safe and relaxed.
The practitioner will begin the session with you fully covered by a sheet and blanket. Throughout the session, they will undrape only the areas of the body that are being worked on in that present moment, before redraping and moving on to the next area. This allows clients to remain modest and prevents any unwanted chills during the session.
Post Massage: What’s Next?
Once your session is completed, your massage professional will step out of the room to give you privacy as you dress. Once you are ready, you will be given options for maintenance and aftercare to prolong the effects of your session, as well as options to rebook for your next appointment!
