Massage: Your Stress Escape
June 23, 2025To some, hair is just something that grows from their head. They don’t pay much attention to it, and that’s ok! To others, hair can be seen as a symbol of expression, identity, confidence, and even culture. When things start to go rogue with hair, such as breakage, thinning, or not growing past a certain length, it can feel frustrating and discouraging! Here at Tami’s Salon and Spa, we want to work together to help you achieve your hair goals, and that includes finding ways to help support hair growth!
It Starts at the Root
Like most things, you need to start with a good foundation. That foundation for your hair is your scalp! Our scalp can get built up with a lot of things, such as products and our natural oils, pretty easily. When that happens, it can be hard for our hair to grow. So how do we suggest encouraging a healthy scalp?
- Clean your hair properly: When washing your hair, it’s important to ensure you’re getting your whole scalp, not just the top of your head. We recommend applying the shampoo to the front AND back of your hands, and crisscrossing all over your head. If you need another shampoo – do so! Sometimes we need more than that depending on how long we go without washing our hair, or how clean it is!

- Use a clarifying shampoo once a week: if you have color-treated hair, it’s important to use one that is color safe. This can help remove the buildup!
- Gentle, daily scalp massage: gently massaging your scalp daily can help increase blood circulation. Increased blood circulation delivers essential nutrients, oxygen, and chemicals to hair follicles. Healthy hair follicles mean healthy hair growth!
- Scalp oils and treatments: Look for products with ingredients such as tea tree oil, rosemary, or peppermint. These can stimulate the scalp, encouraging hair growth! The ideal environment for hair follicles to thrive is a clean and nourished scalp. In some cases, this can even help reduce hair loss over time.

Get Regular Trims
We get it! It sounds so counterintuitive to cut your hair in order for your hair to grow faster. You don’t need to get your hair cut, or cut off a lot. Our goal is to cut off split ends to prevent breakage, keeping strands strong and allowing you to retain more length over time. It’s not losing length, it’s preventing breakage! Our stylists recommend coming in every 8-10 weeks to get regular trims. Keep in mind, depending on your lifestyle, hair type, and the condition of your hair, you may be able to go longer in between trims!!
Turn the Heat Down
Heat is SO hard on our hair and can lead to so much breakage and damage! We aren’t saying to never use hot tools on your hair, we’re saying to turn down the heat and use a quality heat protectant. The temperature of your hot tool can depend heavily on your hair type and texture, so ask your stylist for recommendations! When it comes to a quality heat protectant, there’s a few guidelines that are good to follow.
-
- Hair type matters: If you have fine or thin hair, a spray or serum will give you the protection you need without weighing it down. Those with thicker hair may want to consider creams instead to help smooth and hydrate, as well as protect.
- Check Ingredients: Looking for ingredients that support your hair goals are important, whether you need hydration, strengthening, nourishing or even UV protection, there’s a heat protectant that’s right for you!
The Right Amount of Protection: Most heat protectants will tell you how high they protect against. For example, 450 degrees. When choosing a product, think about the heat setting you typically use. This can help you choose the right amount of protection!
Be Conscious of Chemical Services
Constantly bleaching, coloring, using chemicals on your hair can negatively affect your hair growth. Opting for low-maintenance services is a great way to help minimize the damage, as well as finding nourishing solutions. At Tami’s Salon and Spa, we’ve had success using the Kevin Murphy Gloss line to help our clients change up their hair while keeping it healthy. Other solutions could include Brazilian Blowouts and more! Ask your stylist what options they would suggest for you!
Hairstyles Matter – Even when You Sleep
High ponytails, tight braids, and extensions can pull on the scalp and cause breakage. In some cases, it can lead to traction alopecia, which can happen when you sleep with your hair down and it rubs against your pillow, causing breakage. During the day, switch up your style and give your hair a break when needed. If your hairstyle is causing you to have a headache, or for your “hair to hurt” it’s a sign that your style is too tight. At night, sleeping on a silk or satin pillowcase to reduce friction and sleeping with a silk bonnet or scarf are great ways to help protect your hair! Lastly, don’t go to bed with wet hair. Going to sleep with wet hair can dry your hair out more, and can even create an environment for mold and mildew to grow in your pillow or your scalp. Yuck. When your hair is dry, it has a tendency to break more, and creating an environment for mold and mildew to grow isn’t healthy for you or your hair.

What You Put in Your Body Matters
If you pay attention, your hair can tell a lot about you, your diet, and even your health. For example, if you don’t drink a lot of water, your hair will most likely be dry and brittle due to dehydration. If you’re on a lot of medications, even for a short period of time, your hair tends to show signs of it within about 3 months. The point is, what you put in your body matters! Eating a healthy, balanced diet and staying hydrated can help boost hair growth because you’re giving your body the nutrients it needs, and in turn giving your hair the best chance at growing healthy and strong. And yes, drinking plenty of water can help keep your hair hydrated from within, which is so important, especially if you live in a dry climate like we do in East Idaho!

None of these options will make your hair grow overnight. It takes a lot of patience and a lot of consistency. Luckily, your beUtofullness certified cosmetologists are here to help support you in your hair growth journey! Remember, you got this!
