- Aftercare: Skip the gym for 24 hours
How to Prepare for Your Waxing Appointment
The secret to a successful wax starts 24-48 hours before your appointment. To get the best results, keep these three things in mind:
- Hair Length: Your hair should be around the length of a grain of rice (¼ inch). This is because wax can’t grip hair that is too short, and hair that is too long can cause extra discomfort. Some salons, like the beUtofullness Way by Tami’s Salon and Spa, have the ability to trim hair that is too long.
- Exfoliation: Exfoliating the area(s) that will be waxed about 24 hours before your appointment helps to lift dead skin cells and prevent ingrown hairs.
- Hydration: Drink plenty of water and avoid caffeine right before your appointment, since caffeine can make your skin more sensitive.
- Wear Loose Clothing: This helps reduce friction and irritation.
When You Arrive at your Waxing Appointment
You made it to the appointment – great! Once checked in, your Esthetician will lead you to a private treatment room.
- The Chat: Your Esthetician will ask you about any sensitivities, allergies, medications you’re taking, as well as any questions or concerns you may have. They will also ask you questions to determine what type of wax would be best for you.
- The Prep: You’ll be given privacy to undress (depending on the area being waxed) and get on the treatment table.
During the Waxing Appointment
We can’t speak for other salons and how they do their waxing process. When you get waxed at the beUtofullness Way by Tami’s Salon and Spa in Rexburg, this is how the process will usually go!
- Cleansing: The Esthetician will cleanse the area to remove any oils, sweat, or lotion.
- Application: A warm wax is applied in the direction of hair growth. We typically use Hard Wax for sensitive areas, or Soft Wax for larger areas.
- Removal: The wax is removed quickly in the opposite direction of hair growth. Your Esthetician will immediately apply firm pressure to the area to soothe the area.
- Repeat: The application and removal steps will be repeated until the wax is complete.
- Cleanup: Any stray hairs are removed with tweezers. Next, we’ll clean up any leftover wax or residue. We finish with a post wax product to help soothe the area.
Waxing Aftercare: How to Maintain Smooth Skin
Caring for your freshly waxed skin is a vital piece to having a successful wax. Keep in mind your skin may be pink and sensitive for the next 24-48 hours. Some other steps to follow in order to keep your skin smooth and bump-free are:
- Avoid Heat: No hot tubs, saunas, or intense work outs for 24 hours.
- Soothe: Ask one of our Estheticians about our post-wax serums if you feel any lingering heat!
- Wear Loose Clothing: Wearing breathable, cotton fabrics can help us to avoid irritation.
Waxing FAQ’s
- Does it hurt? We won’t sugarcoat it: there is a quick “sting” but it lasts only a few seconds. At the beUtofullness Way by Tami’s Salon and Spa in Rexburg, we train our Estheticians in techniques to minimize discomfort for our clients. Many clients have expressed that the anticipation is worse than the actual thing. With consistent waxing sessions, the pain usually goes down more each time.
- How long does a wax last? Generally, you can anticipate professional waxes lasting 3-6 weeks depending on your individual growth cycle and how consistently you wax. Most clients have found that when they continue to come in for regular waxing appointments, their hair grows back thinner and slower over time. For best practice, this does include waxing, even through the cold winter months in Idaho!
- Can I get a wax while on my period? Yes, you can! However, please be aware that you are often more sensitive during your menstrual cycle, so the appointment might feel slightly more uncomfortable than usual. If you’re getting an intimate wax like a Brazilian or a Bikini Wax, simply wear a clean tampon or menstrual cup. For more information on this, you can visit our blog about waxing during your period.
- Will waxing make my hair grow back thicker? No. In fact, you can anticipate the opposite! Consistent waxing can often result in finer, lighter, and sparser hair regrowth. Rain, snow, or shine, consistent waxing will help you achieve the best results for all your adventures around Idaho!
- Can I get waxed if I’m using Retinol or Acne Medication? You should avoid waxing when you are using Retin-A, Renova, or high-strength retinol. This is because these products thin the skin and can lead to “lifting” or tearing of the skin. If you are taking Accutane, you must wait at least 6 months after finishing your dosage before waxing. Always inform your Esthetician of your current skincare routine and any medications you’re taking.
