When it comes to skincare, we’re always looking for the next best thing. Every few months a new trend will pop up with people flocking to it so they can reap the benefits of it asap! One ingredient that has consistently been in the skincare spotlight though, is Vitamin C. We know the benefits of vitamin C when it comes to our immune system, so let’s explore how amazing Vitamin C can be for our skin too!
Vitamin C has the ability to brighten dull skin and even our pigmentation, giving you the glow you’ve been craving! This works by inhibiting melanin production, which helps fade dark spots, acne scars, and hyperpigmentation over time. One of our favorite, lightweight products to use is the Citrus & Kale Potent C+E Serum from Eminence Organics. Super easy to use, and we carry it in store, too!
When it comes to protecting your skin from free radical damage, you definitely want Vitamin C in your corner. Why are we fighting free radical damage? Free radical damage accelerates aging and leads to various skin issues, including disrupted collagen and elastin production. When these productions are disrupted, you’ll see more signs of aging like lines, wrinkles, and uneven skin tone.
One of the side effects of aging is that our collagen production slows down. This leads to fine lines, wrinkles, and sagging- all things we want to avoid. When you consistently use Vitamin C, it encourages your skin to produce more collagen, leading to better firmness and elasticity. It’s an easy nudge in the direction of youthful skin.
As if Vitamin C wasn’t already working hard with the benefits we already talked about, it also supports your skin’s moisture barrier. If you live in a dry climate like we do here in Eastern Idaho, you know how important it is to have all the moisture products you can for your skin and hair. Vitamin C enhances the production of carrier lipids and limits transepidermal water loss. All the things we’re looking for to promote hydrated skin!
Vitamin C has a fantastic super power when it comes to your skin’s natural healing process. When you get a blemish, sunburn, or just a minor irritation, Vitamin C can help by reducing inflammation, calm redness, and help repair more efficiently. Vitamin C can also stimulate the production of new skin cells, which also contributes to the natural healing process of our skin. Consistently using Vitamin C means you’ll notice things fade quicker, redness calms down faster, and the overall texture of your skin improves over time.
One of the really nice things about Vitamin C is that it works well with other skincare ingredients. It can even enhance other ingredients and boost their benefits. For example, when you use it alongside SPF, it enhances your protection against sun damage (free radicals). If you love using Hyaluronic Acid, pair it with Vitamin C to get plump, glowing skin. Do be careful, though, especially if you use AHA’s, BHA’s, Retinols, Benzoyl Peroxide, or Salicylic Acid. Some of these combinations can make Vitamin C basically useless, while others can cause irritation. Talk with your Esthetician to make sure you’re making educated decisions about what you’re using on your skin.
Our body doesn’t naturally make Vitamin C, and actually has a really hard time holding on to it. Because of this, it’s important to find ways to help our body get the Vitamin C it needs! Our Estheticians love to recommend adding a Vitamin C Serum to your skincare routine. Typically, Vitamin C products are formulated in a fast-absorbing formula, so you can easily use it morning or night. After you cleanse and tone your skin, simply apply 1-2 drops and use your fingers to spread the serum over your face and neck. Once absorbed, you can move onto your moisturizer or facial oil!
For more benefits, our Estheticians recommend enhancing your routine by adding the Citrus & Kale Potent C+E Masque and the Rosehip Triple C+E Firming Oil, all from Eminence Organics Skincare.
You’ll want to pick a serum with L-ascorbic acid. This is because it is the most potent and effective variety of vitamin C in skincare. You want the concentration to be 10%-20% for a good middle ground. This will ensure it’s potent enough, and not too strong. If you see the ingredients “Vitamin E” or “Ferulic Acid” that’s a good sign. These ingredients are very complimentary to Vitamin C and help keep the formula stabilized.
If you have sensitive skin, don’t be afraid to do a patch test. Simply select a small area of skin that can easily be concealed. Usually, we recommend your forearm or behind your ear. Apply a small amount of the product you’re testing out and wait for 24 hours. If no irritation or side effects occur, apply to your face. As with any product, if discomfort, irritation, hives, or other side effects occur, discontinue use of the product.
We could honestly go on and on about how amazing Vitamin C is. It’s found in so many amazing products!
