With the rising popularity of getting gel nails, and even doing gel nails at home, there seems to have also been a rise with allergic reactions to gel nail products. So what does a reaction look like, and if you are having a reaction, does it mean you can’t get your nails done anymore? Don’t worry, we’re answering all your questions!
Gel Polish is made of specific chemical components that ensure a durable result. People can develop allergies to certain chemicals found in gel products, particularly methacrylates, which are the main compound in the gel. It’s possible for a gel allergy to develop suddenly, even if you have been getting gel nails for awhile with no issue. Different brands, new formulas, and the concentration of the chemicals can trigger a reaction.
The most common symptoms of a gel product allergy include redness, swelling, itching, and changes in the nail. These changes can be serious, such as your nail detaching from the nail bed, lifting, separating, or changing color. Because of this, it’s important to take allergic reactions seriously.
The first thing we recommend doing if you have an allergy is removing the nails completely until the symptoms of the allergic reaction are gone. Depending on the severity of the reaction and the symptoms you experience, this can vary. Keep in mind, if the reaction is severe, you may need to consult your Dermatologist or Primary Care Provider. Next would be to look for Hypoallergenic options for your nails. Here at Tami’s Salon and Spa in Rexburg, Idaho, we offer Hypoallergenic Manicure Options for our clients who need it.

This all does sound very simple, however sometime that can lead to allergic reactions is the improper curing of gel products, including polish. Could this be a contributing factor into why there has been rising allergic reactions? Potentially. Just something to think about!
