Cupping Therapy is a technique that uses cups to create suction on the skin to release adhesions in soft tissues and increase blood flow to that localized area. This holds many benefits we’ll talk about later! Cupping has been around for thousands of years, with evidence of it being used in ancient Egypt, China, and Greece. Here at Tami’s Salon and Spa, our Licensed Massage Therapists use silicone cups to perform Cupping Therapy. Let’s dive into cupping and see if cupping would be a good fit for you at your next massage therapy appointment!
The short answer is, it can. Everyone’s skin reacts differently to the suction from the cups. Any bruises or marks made can also depend on how long the cups are left in one spot. If you do end up with marks, remember, they are normal and are not harmful. The marks look similar to a bruise because the blood flow has been brought closer to the surface of the skin. However, they should not hurt like a muscular bruise. The marks can take up to two weeks to fade away.
When first applying the cups, the suction can be surprising! When more suction is applied it pulls more of the soft tissues and can feel like stretching a tight muscle. If too much suction is applied to a tender area, it can feel painful. You may feel an itchy/tingly sensation in the spot where a cup is stationary. While “running” the cups along the skin it should feel like a smooth and relaxing motion. If the cup goes over an area that needs some work, the cup will want to stay there. Your massage therapist should keep a good line of communication open with you while doing the cupping. If you are experiencing any pain during the application, let your therapist know and the amount of suction can be adjusted.
There are many benefits of Cupping Therapy! Many clients have reported improved blood circulation, pain relief, relief of tension for deeper muscles, reduced inflammation, and more!
