Oftentimes, Massage Therapy is treated more like a luxury experience than a necessary way to keep your body, mind, and soul in alignment! The benefits don’t stop there. Clients seek Massage Therapy for relief from pain, stress, and tension. Others seek massage therapy as a solution for an ailment they have. Whatever your reason, if this is your first massage, you may feel confused on what to expect. Will the Massage Therapist hurt you? Are you supposed to talk? Are you supposed to get… naked?? Never fear, we have a guide to help you through it!
Some discomfort or slight pain is common, especially if you’re getting a deep tissue or therapeutic massage. Not every massage needs to be either of these. Your Licensed Massage Therapist will check in with pressure to make sure you are comfortable, and the pain isn’t too intense. It’s important to be honest with yourself and your massage therapist, especially if the pain is too much. You want to feel better after your massage, not worse.
This is completely up to you, as the client! Some clients love talking and it can help them relax, especially if they have a lot on their mind they need to let go of. Other clients love having a relaxing environment, and even fall asleep! It’s truly whatever you need and want!
Comfort, comfort, comfort! You’ll want something that is comfortable and easy to take off and put back on. We also recommend skipping the dangling jewelry. For footwear, you’ll want something comfortable and easy to slip on and off, if possible.
How you do your hair is up to you, but we have some guidelines to think about. You want a hairstyle that is comfortable to lay on when you’re on your back. For example, if you do a low bun hairstyle, chances are you won’t be comfortable with the bun digging into your scalp. Same goes for a ponytail. Great options we’ve seen are braids, high buns or ponytails, or just leaving your hair down. Massage Therapists are trained to work around hair, so don’t stress too much about this!
Now the elephant in the room… “Do I have to get naked??” You should only take off as much clothing as you are comfortable with, whether that’s all, nothing, or somewhere in between. Massage Therapists are bound by a code of ethics, and they must always keep you covered, aside from the area they are working on. The draping should always ensure that none of your bits are hanging out, and you are comfortable.
Massage is a fantastic way to heal your body, soul, and mind. If you have any more questions, don’t be afraid to ask your Licensed Massage Therapist! We hope you are able to enjoy your massage and feel a bit better about your massage appointment! If you’re in the Eastern Idaho or Western Wyoming area, we would be happy to have you at the beUtofullness Way by Tami’s Salon and Spa!
