Winter can be a hard season, especially in East Idaho and Western Wyoming. The sun isn’t up, it’s cold, you have to wear more layers, ice and snow can make travel hard, and to top it all off, our hair seems to develop a mind of its own and have issues it didn’t have a few months prior. Here’s some ways you can help combat these issues, directly from the mouths of our beauty professionals!
First and foremost, do not go out in the cold with wet hair. This is really damaging to your hair! Now let’s talk blow drying. Not only is thermal protectant super important, so is the direction you are blow drying! Make sure you are blow drying downwards, not upwards. This will help your hair look and feel smoother after blow drying. For more information on blow drying, visit our blog on Blow Drying!
If you find yourself with tangles, please do not tug on your hair! This will cause your hair to break! If you need products to help, there are really good detanglers that can help, as well as using a wide tooth comb and working your way up, section by section. If you need to detangle in the shower, apply conditioner and let it sit for a couple minutes before working through it with a wide tooth comb. No matter if you are using a brush or wide tooth comb, you’ll want to start at the ends of your hair and work your way up little by little.
If your hair has a lot of static, make sure you are fully blow drying your hair before going out into the cold. Use a thermal protectant when using hot tools and blow drying. This helps protect your hair and helps moisturize it. Also, adding in some extra hydration can really help you and your hair during the cold months!
Frizzy hair is at a whole new level in the winter. Luckily, adding a few products can help minimize frizz! The first is to remember hydration, hydration, hydration! This will help protect your hair from drying! The next two products that can help is a small drop of Argan Oil and implementing an anti humidity spray to combat the rogue hairs.
Split ends are also common in the winter. This is a pretty simple fix, come in for regular trims, use a good leave-in conditioner on your ends, as well as getting a good argan oil to use! We have great options for both of these at Tami’s Salon and Spa in Rexburg, Idaho!
Have you noticed your scalp getting more itchy? You aren’t alone! Come in for a scalp treatment to help unclog hair follicles and remove dead skin cells, and take a look at your shampoo! Using shampoos that are free of chemicals like silicones, parabens and other drying ingredients is key!
Using heatless styles can also help. Experiment and see what fun, easy hairstyles you can come up with when you use little to no heat! There are fantastic resources online, especially thanks to social media. Get creative!
